SOUTH HOLSTON RIVER HOME PAGE

The South Holston River rises near Sugar Grove in Smyth County VA and flows 112 miles southwest to join the North Fork at Kingsport. From there the main stem of the Holston River flows 136 miles (219 km) roughly southwestward, just north of Bays Mountain, until it reaches its confluence with the French Broad River just east of downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. This confluence is considered to be the start of the Tennessee River.

The South Fork of the Holston River or within Tennessee more accurately known as simply the South Holston River is very popular with trout anglers and is affectionately known locally as the SoHO. It’s often rated amongst the top 100 trout streams in the USA and is certainly the best amongst the many good trout streams of Tennessee. Brown trout reproduce in the South Holston River so many that are caught are wild trout.

Please consider showing your appreciation of The South Fork Holston River by picking up some litter during your next visit, many hands make light work.
