Sequatchie River Outfitters: Localwaters note: The regionally famous
Canoe The Sequatchie rental and outfitting business owned by Scott Pilkington has just closed this year (2012). After 34 years in business it’s the end of a tradition for many area families.
Canoe The Sequatchie, widely known by the hundreds of distinctive canoe shaped signs along Tennessee’s highways wil be missed by many. Here is an excerpt from an excellent article published by Get Out Chatanooga, reproduced here for and as recognition of outstanding public service.
*Canoe (or kayak) the Sequatchie yourself Original article available here
The Canoe Man allows people to park and launch canoes or kayaks from his place for free. His launch is located at the intersection of U.S. 127 and John Burch Road in Dunlap. Other put-ins and take-outs on the Sequatchie include:
Old York Highway Bridge ? Walk down a slope next to a city pump house to a put-in 3 miles upstream of Canoe the Sequatchie. Frank Tate Road Bridge ? Gravel road down to the water near the intersection of Frank Tate Road and East Valley Road. Six miles downstream from Canoe the Sequatchie. Mount Calvary Road Beach ? Dirt pull-off and small beach just east of the intersection of Mount Calvary Road and State Route 28. About 12 miles downstream from Frank Tate Bridge. Ketner’s Mill Boat Ramp ? TWRA Ramp on Ketner Mill Lane near intersection with Ketner Mill Road. About 12 miles downstream from Mount Calvary Beach and 17 miles upstream from the Tennessee River. South Pittsburg Municipal Boat Ramp ? Public park and boat ramp located 5 miles downstream from the mouth of the Sequatchie on the Tennessee River. *Canoe The Sequatchie is for sale, when the business does sell then these generous policies of Scott Pilkington’s will most likely change. As of 2012 it’s a real nice thing he’s doing for both the people and the river. Salute! Interested buyers contact: Scott Pilkington (423) 949-4400 12777 U.S. 127 Dunlap, TN 37327
