Localwaters visited Cordell Hull lake for a few days in October 2012. Our base camp was at the Corps of Engineers’ Salt Lick Creek campground on one of the many camp sites that are directly on the water. The lake is under visited, probably because it’s more like a river and narrower in the main channel than most area lakes. The lake water is often cooler than otherwise expected because of the direct influences of the cold water releases from Dale Hollow dam (on one day during our visit the water temp dropped 5 degrees). It’s an exceptionally clean lake with massive cliffs along the main channel and large flats and gentle sloping shallow areas where it backs up as sloughs into numerous tributaries. We had several instances of boat motor problems and didn’t get to explore the lake as much as hoped for but we will be back next season. We only explored and fished a few miles west of Salt Lick creek and about ten miles east. The lake is known for it’s Striped Bass, Walleye and Sauger and has a unique slot limit for black bass that’s set to change as of 2013.
