Two good friends and I did a float trip on the Buffalo River from Topsy Bridge to Crazy Horse Canoe Rental just before Memorial day weekend 2013. We enjoyed the river so much we floated the same stretch again the next day.

Buffalo River Information and Maps

It was a rare, for us “no Fishing” trip just for fun and to unwind. On the first day we rented a kayak and a canoe, on the second day we were all in kayaks. Both days were a blast but I prefer a kayak for maneuverability if I don’t need the carrying capacity of a canoe for overnight camping with all the gear that can involve.

Buffalo River-worth remembering

We didn’t camp on the river during our float like we usually do elsewhere. Instead we camped at Crazy Horse Canoe’s campground and used it as our base yet we were lucky and able to get a campsite right on the river. We found the campground to be clean, well-managed, super friendly and reasonably priced. The Buffalo river is exceptionally free of litter in this section, we picked up a few cans from the gravel bars but it was surprising how little litter there was. It was my first float trip on the buffalo but my companions Joe and Ryan had each floated the Buffalo many times before. The Buffalo is one of the cleanest and most beautiful warm water rivers I’ve ever visited. I just wish I’d followed Ryan and Joe’s advice to visit it years ago. The Caney Fork River is so close to my home and so full of trout it makes it hard to wander far with gas prices being so high. It’s nice though to float a warm water river that’s so ideal for swimming and the many gravel bars are just the perfect place. Over two days of floating I only saw one snake but we saw thousands of turtles and plenty of fish. I’ll be back with my fishing poles and tackle soon.
